President Donald Trump has made the right decision to try working out border security through negotiating rather than by executive order, former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie said Tuesday.
"The president is trying to keep a good relationship with Congress," Christie said during an interview on Fox News' "Fox and Friends" to discuss his new book, "Let Me Finish: Trump, the Kushners, Bannon, New Jersey, and the Power of In-Your-Face Politics."
Trump does not want to take the power to legislate on the matter away from Congress, Christie added.
"What people don't understand about this president is he does know how to negotiate," Christie. "He knows how to build relationships, and he is trying to do that. But if people on the other side don't want to build a relationship with you. It's impossible to do it."
He also insisted that Trump must be involved in the negotiations.
"If they try to exclude him, they are setting everybody up for failure and leaving him with no alternative but to take executive action," said Christie.
Christie also discussed the number of potential roles that had been discussed for his potential role in the Trump administration, including attorney general or vice president, and his reaction when they did not happen.
"What people need to understand and what comes through in this book is that I love the president and he is my friend," said Christie, adding that he will do whatever Trump needs because he thinks he is good for the country.
