Hillary Rodham Clinton says she wants to make gun control an issue voters think about when they cast ballots on Election Day.
The former secretary of state is in Iowa Tuesday, leaning into a policy debate that Democrats have avoided in the past against Republicans.
Clinton says at a town hall that she realizes curbing gun violence is a "tough battle." But she says she's determined to push measures that would expand background checks and close loopholes to prevent guns from getting in the wrong hands.
Clinton's push on gun control could help her against her main Democratic rival, Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, who has opposed some gun control measures in the Senate.
Sanders voted for a 2005 measure to give gun manufacturers immunity from lawsuits. Clinton opposed that bill.
