Former U.S. president Bill Clinton on Monday hailed the late British prime minister Margaret Thatcher as an "iconic" and ground-breaking leader.

Clinton said in a statement he "was saddened" to hear of her death at the age of 87 on Monday.

"The United Kingdom has lost its first woman Prime Minister, an iconic stateswoman, and a fearless leader. The United States has lost one of its dearest friends and most valued allies," he said.

Clinton said he "respected" Thatcher's drive in a "remarkable life as she broke barriers, defied expectations, and led her country."

Clinton said his wife Hillary, who is widely seen as hoping to become the first woman in the U.S. presidency in 2016, and his daughter Chelsea "extend our condolences to her family and to the people of the United Kingdom."
