CNN has retracted a report linking Anthony Scaramucci, a key ally of President Donald Trump, to a Russian investment fund managed by a Moscow-controlled bank.

"On June 22, 2017, CNN.com published a story connecting Anthony Scaramucci with investigations into the Russian Direct Investment Fund," the cable news network said in a statement posted Friday on Twitter.

"That story did not meet CNN's editorial standards and has been retracted," the statement said. "Links to the story have been disabled.

"CNN apologizes to Mr. Scaramucci."

Scaramucci, who served on Trump's transition team, accepted CNN's apology on Saturday via Twitter, saying that the network "did the right thing" and that he was "moving on."

The original report contended that the Senate was investigating the activities of a $10 billion Russian investment fund in connection to Scaramucci, The Hill reports.

Scaramucci, 53, founded SkyBridge Capital, a global investment fund, in 2005 in New York City.

Trump announced in January that he would appoint Scaramucci to head the White House Office of Public Liaison and Intergovernmental Affairs but eventually appointed someone else to the position.
