Sixty-two percent of Americans want President Donald Trump and Congress to make a deal for stronger borders and a pathway to citizenship for those included in the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, according to a Harvard CAPS/Harris poll released exclusively to The Hill on Monday.
The survey also found that 58 percent believed there is a growing humanitarian and security crisis at the nation's southern border.
"It’s incredible how this has become the most important issue over healthcare,” said Mark Penn, co-director of the Harvard CAPS/Harris poll. “Democrats are increasingly on the defensive on the issue."
Penn said that "The public still backs a compromise of tougher borders and a reformed system that would also give work permits and or a path to citizenship for DACA recipients."
The poll was conducted online on July 31 and Aug. 1 among 2,214 registered U.S. voters. The survey is an online sample drawn from the Harris Panel and weighted to reflect known demographics. As a representative online sample, it does not report a probability confidence interval.
