Donors are tossing cash at multiple Democratic presidential candidates — with the biggest overlap existing among those who gave both to Sen. Kamala Harris, D-Calif., and at least one other campaign, BuzzFeed News reported.
In an analysis of 1,600 donors who’ve ponied up more than $200 to multiple Democratic contenders from January through March, more than 700 gave to Harris’s campaign and at least one other, BuzzFeed News reported.
About 170 donors gave more than $200 to both Harris’s and South Bend, Ind., Mayor Pete Buttigieg’s campaigns, and some 166 gave to both the campaigns of Sen. Cory Booker, D-N.J., and Harris, according to presidential fundraising numbers filed with the Federal Election Commission, the news outlet reported.
In other findings, BuzzFeed News reported:
- There also was overlap between donors who gave to both former Texas Democratic Rep. Beto O’Rourke and Buttigieg, and those who gave to both Sens. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., and Bernie Sanders, I-Vt.
- Sanders had the largest number of disclosed donors in the first quarter, only roughly 300 of them overlapped with any other campaign. That’s about the same number as Booker, who reported one-third as many donors.
Candidates need to meet a donor threshold to qualify for the primary debates.
According to BuzzFeed News, the analysis showed there’s no rush to whittle down the large Democratic field of 2020 candidates. Roughly 270 donors who gave more than $200 to three or more Democratic candidates between January and March. About a dozen of those donors have given to five or more candidates.
Candidates need to meet a donor threshold to qualify for the primary debates.
