In the week since polls closed for the midterm elections, Democrats have dramatically turns things around, CNN is reporting.
Rep. Martha McSally, R-Ariz., conceded her Senate race to Rep. Kyrsten Sinema, D-Ariz. Her win capped off a week in which Senate Democrats came up with big wins in Montana and Nevada. And the Senate race in Florida, where Gov. Rick Scott holds a very narrow lead over Sen. Bill Nelson, D-Fla., remains undecided. Votes in the race are presently being recounted.
Still to come is the Nov. 27th runoff in Mississippi where appointed Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith is facing Democrat Mike Espy.
Following the initial midterm results last week, President Donald Trump had called “our big victory.”
But as things now stand, Democrats have lost a total of one Senate seat from where they were prior to the elections, CNN reported. If Scott wins in Florida and Hyde-Smith is victorious in Mississippi, it will mean Democrats will have a net loss of two seats in the Senate.
CNN noted that before the midterms, some Republicans believed they had a chance of going from 51 votes in the Senate to 60.
CNN said it sets the stage for the 2020 elections. Twenty-two Republicans face re-election then, compared to just 12 Democrats. And Democrats can now make the case they can retake the Senate in the next election, according to CNN.
