Some Democrats are growing concerned about the party’s lack of a digital counter-punch to deal with tweets from the Republican National Committee and RNC chairwoman Ronna McDaniel blasting former Vice President Joe Biden and impeachment efforts, Politico is reporting.
The RNC and McDaniel have been tweeting about the two issues for days, according to Politico. But the Democratic National Committee has focused its tweets on minimum wage issues, healthcare and immigration.
The first tweet dealing with accusations that President Donald Trump asked foreign countries to investigate Biden did not come until Thursday. However, the DNC does operate another more aggressive Twitter account. It has been targeting Trump and Republicans. But its following it much smaller than the main DNC Twitter account.
“The DNC should be much more active and vigorous than they have been,” said Don Fowler, a former DNC chairman.
He made a point to say he wasn’t criticizing the party’s current chairman, Tom Perez.
Others, however, note the DNC adopted a strict pledge of neutrality in 2018. As a result, any effort to defend Biden might be viewed as a violation of that pledge, Politico noted.
“I don’t think the party needs to do anything,” said Kathy Sullivan, former New Hampshire Democratic Party chairwoman. “Donald Trump is doing perfectly well jumping off a cliff all by himself. Nobody has to push him.”
But a DNC member added: “In this situation, if you don’t defend (Biden) by name and often and vigorously, you’re making him a further victim by the party, you’re not standing behind him.”
