Republicans hope to have a major tax reform package wrapped up and delivered to the American people just in time for Christmas, a House budget leader told Fox News Friday.
"We want to get this done before the Christmas holiday," said Rep. Diane Black of Tennessee, chairwoman of the House Budget Committee.
Black noted that the House has a big task to get support from 20 members who voted against a budget bill this week. The bill passed the House Thursday on a vote of 216-121. The Senate approved it last week.
The budget bill clears the way for a major tax break, but the opposition in the House comes from members in high-tax states who fear their constituents will lose deductions for state and local taxes from their federal tax bill.
"When you have a tax code this large if you turn a dial one way it affects something somewhere on the other side. We're working with them," she said.
Black predicted the upcoming tax-cut bill will boost the economy and save money for middle-class taxpayers.
"I think the American people have won. Yesterday, they were the true winners especially those in the middle income," Black said.
Democrats, however, has denounced the proposed revenue bill as tax cuts for the wealthy and predicted the middle class will pay more.
