The Department of Defense wasted $58 billion on canceled weapons over two decades, the Washington Examiner reported.

Buried on page 107 of a 224-page report written by Undersecretary of Defense Frank Kendall is the line item "Total Sunk:" $58.3 billion.

Dating back to 1997, the biggest expenditure to never come to fruition was the near $21 billion spent on the Future Combat System, the Examiner reported.

Combined with $9.8 billion dropped on the Comanche helicopter, those two alone account for nearly 50 percent of the sunk costs, according to the Examiner.

The Examiner reported that not all is lost; technology developed for the failed weaponry can be used in other systems.
