Donald Trump is apologizing on behalf of a "young intern" after his Twitter account retweeted someone who cast aspersions on Iowa voters after a poll showed Ben Carson leading Trump in that state.

The original Tweet, posted by someone with the username @mygreenhippo read:

Trump's account copy/pasted the tweet, giving credit to the original Twitter user.

But Twitter quickly reacted negatively, with conservative pundit John Podhoretz predicting Trump would quickly apologize for it.

Vox and Mediaite both said it sounded like the GOP frontrunner was insulting Iowans' intelligence for turning their allegience, at least for the moment, to the retired neurosurgeon.

It took a couple of hours, but the tweet was deleted. It was replaced with an apology from the "young intern who accidentally did a Retweet."

Not everyone was buying it. Mediaite's Josh Feldman noted that the wording was "weird."

"'Did a Retweet.' Aces," Feldman wrote.

"Weekly Standard" editor Bill Kristol and Jeb Bush strategist David Kochel slammed the apology as well.
