Former President Donald Trump lost a key member of his legal team.

CNN reported that attorney Timothy Parlatore, who played a role in the Mar-a-Lago documents investigation and in December testified before the grand jury probing the president's handling of the documents, is leaving Trump's legal team.

"It's been an incredible honor to serve and work through interesting legal issues. My departure was a personal choice and does not reflect upon the case, as I believe strongly the (Justice Department) team is engaging in misconduct to pursue an investigation of conduct that is not criminal," Parlatore said in a statement to CNN.

Parlatore's departure comes as special counsel Jack Smith appears to be finishing investigations into the possible mishandling of classified documents.

While working for Trump, Parlatore organized searches for additional classified documents at locations that included Trump Tower and Trump's properties in New Jersey and Florida.

Parlatore also voluntarily appeared for about seven hours before the grand jury after the Justice Department had grown increasingly concerned that Trump still held classified documents after the Aug. 8 search at Mar-a-Lago, ABC News first reported

"They repeatedly tried to ask me about my conversations with President Trump, which is totally outside the scope of what I was there for," Parlatore said in March.

Parlatore recently helped write a letter that was sent to House Intelligence Chair Mike Turner, R-Ohio, asking Congress to tell the DOJ to defer to the intelligence community regarding the probe into what happened with the documents.

CNN reported that Trump's legal team "has been rife with infighting" for several months as lawyers have dealt with multiple investigations amid his third run for office.

The outlet also said Trump privately has been unhappy about his large legal bills and asked why the probes have not disappeared.

During a town hall with CNN last week, Trump said he was "allowed" to take documents when he left office.

"When we left Washington, we had the boxes lined up on the sidewalk outside for everybody," Trump said. "People are taking pictures of them. Everybody knew we were taking those boxes."
