During his inaugural address Monday, President Donald Trump vowed to rename the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America and rename Denali to Mount McKinley.
"America will reclaim its rightful place as the greatest, most powerful, most respected nation on earth inspiring the awe, admiration of the entire world," Trump said. "A short time from now, we will be changing the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America and we will be restoring the name of a great president, William McKinley, to Mount McKinley, where it should be and where it belongs."
CBS News reported that Trump will include the name changes as part of a cluster of executive orders to be issued on his first day in office.
Sen. Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska, said in a statement that she is "so against" the renaming of Denali.
"Because the mountain was named 10,000 years ago by the Native people, the Athabascans in the area, and it is called Denali, which means the great one," Murkowski said. "So I would just suggest to President Trump, who wants to make everything great, we already have a great name for it, so we're gonna talk about it. I've already talked to him about it."
Former President Barack Obama approved an order from the Department of the Interior in 2015 to change the name of Mount McKinley to Denali.
According to the The Associated Press, the Gulf of Mexico is the body of water's historic name, having held it for more than four centuries.
