A former Donald Trump campaign adviser called the resignation of some state operatives for the GOP presidential nominee "troublesome," and the selection of Steve Bannon as a top aide made him "nervous."

In a radio interview Monday with WBEN NewsRadio in Buffalo, N.Y., strategist Michael Caputo — who quit the Trump campaign in June after poking at Trump's firing of campaign manager of Corey Lewandowski on Twitter — said "anything can happen to turn this race on its head."

"It is rather late in the game to be switching your leadership and that makes people like me nervous," he said, noting Bannon, of the conservative Breitbart News outlet, had never worked on a political campaign before.

But he praised Trump's on-the-ground staff in must-win states.

"The nuts and bolts, in really important states like Pennsylvania, North Carolina, other places that they really have to win, they've got some very, very experienced operatives who've worked on the statewide and presidential campaigns in those very states before," Caputo said.

"So I'm more confident about the field game than I was, let's say, 10 days ago."

"But I got some unfortunate news yesterday, where I found out that some of the operatives are actually leaving," he added. "One in particular that I had helped put in place is leaving and gone on to other employment. So there are some resignations happening farther down beneath the skin of this campaign, that are a little bit troublesome."

Caputo declined to identify which operative or operatives he was referencing, but said he had expected resignations by now and was proven wrong, Buzz Feed News reports
