Conservatives who had been some of President Donald Trump's strongest supporters are raging against his decision to launch strikes on Syrian chemical weapons facilities Friday night, saying the attacks were too much like those waged by his predecessors.
Most of the disappointment came from people who backed onto the president's "America First" campaign promise, reports Politico, with many comparing him to former President George W. Bush and even Hillary Clinton, had she been elected president.
“Congratulations to the Trump administration for adopting the same failed foreign policy and ignoring of the constitution as the last two administrations,” tweeted Doug Stafford, a strategist for Sen. Rand Paul’s RANDPAC.
He also retweeted some of Trump's earlier calls against presidential involvement in Syria, including one from 2003 to then-President George W. Bush when he tweeted, in all capital letters: "AGAIN, TO OUR VERY FOOLISH LEADER, DO NOT ATTACK SYRIA - IF YOU DO MANY VERY BAD THINGS WILL HAPPEN & FROM THAT FIGHT THE U.S. GETS NOTHING!"
"I was hoping this episode would reveal that this was a message to his future self, but apparently not," Stafford said.
Author and radio host Michael Savage also tore into Trump's decision, tweeting "we lost. War machine bombs syria. No evidence Assad did it. Sad warmongers hijacking our nation."
“Donald Bush,” tweeted Mike Cernovich, once one of Trump's staunch supporters. In another message, he tweeted: "At least I won’t feel bad when he gets impeached."
Conservative author Ann Coulter, who has grown more critical of the president since inauguration, retweeted several people questioning military action in Syria, as well as past tweets Trump had posted himself.
Meanwhile, in recent weeks, before chemical weapons attacks in Damascus on April 7 that killed dozens of people, including women and children, Trump had insisted he wanted to bring U.S. troops out of Syria.
