Undocumented immigrants who were brought to the U.S. when they were children should be allowed to stay in the States and apply for citizenship, according to voters in a Quinnipiac University poll released Thursday.
Those who took the poll approved of Dreamers staying by a wide margin.
- 68 percent said Dreamers should be allowed to stay with a path to citizenship.
- 9 percent said they should be allowed to stay, but without a path to citizenship.
- 19 percent said Dreamers should be made to leave the country.
Voters also approved—72 percent to 19 percent—of President Donald Trump working with Democrats to protect the Dreamers.
However, voters were against linking Dreamer protection to providing money to build the U.S.-Mexico border wall, with 57 percent against and 37 percent in favor.
Another poll question asked to what degree criminal convictions should matter regarding illegal immigrants and deportation.
- 52 percent said illegal immigrants convicted of a serious crime should be deported.
- 23 percent said illegal immigrants convicted of any crime should be deported.
- 20 percent said all illegal immigrants should be deported.
- 2 percent said no illegal immigrants should be deported.
The poll surveyed 1,412 voters nationwide from Sept. 21 to 26, with a margin of error of plus or minus 3.1 percentage points. Live interviewers called both cell phones and landlines, according to the poll report.
