Poll: 61 Percent Disapprove of Emergency Declaration

Sixty-one percent of Americans disapprove of President Donald Trump’s declaration of a national emergency to fund a barrier along with the U.S. southern border, a new NPR/PBS NewsHour/Marist poll reveals.

The poll noted 36 percent of those surveyed approve of the president’s action.

Here is how the survey breaks down:

  • 85 percent of Republicans approve of Trump’s declaration of a national emergency, while 12 percent disapprove.
  • 6 percent of Democrats approve, compared to 94 percent who disapprove.
  • 33 percent of independents approve, while 63 percent disapprove.
  • 60 percent of all those surveyed say Trump’s emergency declaration should be challenged in court, while 35 percent say it should not be.
  • 54 percent say the declaration makes it less likely they will vote for Trump in 2020; 33 percent say it makes them more likely and 12 percent say it does not make a difference.

The poll., conducted Feb. 15-17, surveyed 807 adults. It has a margin of error of 4.6 percentage points.
