Rep. Trey Gowdy, R-S.C., on Tuesday said the FBI's use of an informant for the Trump campaign during the 2016 presidential election was appropriate.
"I am even more convinced that the FBI did exactly what my fellow citizens would want them to do when they got the information they got, and that it has nothing to do with Donald Trump," Gowdy said during an interview on Fox News' "The Story."
The Republican's comments came in direct contrast of Trump's public assertions the FBI planted "spies" in his campaign for political purposes.
"Reports are there was indeed at least one FBI representative implanted, for political purposes, into my campaign for president. It took place very early on, and long before the phony Russia Hoax became a “hot” Fake News story. If true - all time biggest political scandal!" Trump tweeted.
"Apparently the DOJ put a Spy in the Trump Campaign. This has never been done before and by any means necessary, they are out to frame Donald Trump for crimes he didn’t commit.” David Asman @LouDobbs @GreggJarrett Really bad stuff!" Trump wrote.
Gowdy, the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee Chairman, met last week with FBI Director Chris Wray and Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein last week to discuss the Russia probe.
"It looks to me like the FBI was doing what President Trump said: 'I want you to do, find it out,'" Gowdy told Fox News. "President Trump himself in the Comey memos said, 'If anyone connected with my campaign was working with Russia, I want you to investigate it.' Sounds to me like that was exactly what the FBI did."
