FBI Director James Comey said he is keeping watch over the FBI's probe into Hillary Clinton's emails, to be sure that the investigation is not affected by politics.
"I love the FBI because we aspire to, and I think we are, three things: We're honest, we're competent, we're independent," Comey said during a speech at Ohio's Kenyon College, reports
Politico.
"I've stayed close to that investigation to ensure that it's done that way," said Comey. "That we have the resources, the technology, the people and that there's no outside influence."
Comey said he is staying "close to this one to make sure we have the resources to do it competently," reports the
Niagara Gazette. And, the Democratic primary happening in July would not have a bearing on the case.
"The urgency is to do it well and promptly. And 'well' comes first," he added.
"I think he realizes he's got to wrap this up well before the conventions or he's going to disenfranchise millions and millions of people," said Ed Klein on Fox Business Network, according to
The Daily Caller.
If Clinton is not indicted, Comey and "a lot of other FBI agents" would resign, Klein said.
"If Clinton is exonerated, Republicans will see it as a cover-up. If there's a criminal indictment, Democrats will read politics into that, too," said columnist Joan Vennochi in the
Boston Globe.
"Either way, the FBI will be criticized."
