Former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick held talks with executives at the new XFL about joining the league for its 2020 debut season, The Sporting News reports.
A spokesman for the XFL, a professional football league intended as an alternative to the National Football League, confirmed to TSN the organization met with Kaepernick last fall to discuss him joining a team before the first season begins in February 2020.
Sources claim the quarterback sought a $20 million contract, the same amount he reportedly wanted from the Alliance of American Football, a direct competitor to the XFL, to play in their league, according to the Associated Press.
The XFL is reportedly planning on paying starting quarterbacks a fraction of that, $250,000 per season. The AAF will give players unguaranteed three-year contracts and $250,000. However, over a dozen NFL quarterbacks make $20 million or more each season, according to TSN.
The XFL has yet to announce any major players, but has confirmed Bob Stoops, Pep Hamilton, and Jim Zorn will coach in the first season.
Kaepernick's attorney did not respond to TSN when asked for comment.
