Americans have more confidence in the U.S. economy than at any point since 2000, according to a new Gallup poll.
The Gallup Economic Confidence Index now stands at plus-40. It marks the highest reading since plus-44 in October 2000. The confidence index is the average of two components: Americans' rating of current economic conditions and opinions of whether the economy is improving or getting worse.
Gallup noted the current conditions component score of plus-54 is the result of 62% of Americans saying the economy is "excellent" or "good." Eight percent described it as "poor." The economic outlook component score is plus 26 and is the result of 59% saying the economy is "getting better" and 33% saying it is "getting worse."
The poll also revealed 68% say it is a good time to find a quality job in the U.S.
"Rarely in the years that Gallup has tracked public ratings of the economy, since the early 1990s, have Americans had higher confidence in the economy than they do now," Gallup said in a report on the results.
"Nearly six in 10 describe the economy's current state positively, and a similar percentage say it's getting better.
"This greater confidence could serve as a boost to the reelection prospects of President Donald Trump, whose initial election coincided with an upward turn for the U.S. economy."
The poll, conduct Jan. 2-15, surveyed 1,014 people. It has a margin of error of plus or minus 4 percentage points.
