Forty-nine percent of Americans say immigrants help the nation’s economy by providing low-cost labor, compared to 40 percent who say they hurt the economy by driving down wages, a new Gallup poll reveals.
Here are the highlights from the survey:
- 72 percent say immigrants take jobs Americans don’t want. 18 percent say they take jobs U.S. adults want.
- 60 percent say immigration has had no effect on their jobs, while 27 percent say it has had a positive impact and 11 percent say it has had a negative one.
- 54 percent say immigration has had no impact on the company they work for, compared to 33 percent who say it has had a positive effect and 12 percent who say it has had a negative one.
"Given Republican President (Donald) Trump's tough policy on immigrants, it is not surprising that members of his party are less likely to say immigrants help the economy," Art Swift of Gallup wrote.
"Democrats are more likely to say immigrants help the economy (59 percent) than Republicans (28 percent)."
The poll was conducted from June 7-11 among 1,009 adults. The margin of error is 4 percentage points.
