Just one out of four Americans believe abortion should be legal with no restrictions, according to a Gallup poll.
Here are how the poll results, released Tuesday, break down:
- 53% believe abortion should be legal “only under certain circumstances.”
- 21% say abortion should be completely illegal.
- 58% say they would oppose a ban on abortions after a fetal heartbeat can be detected, compared to 40% who are in favor.
- 60% do not want the Supreme Court to overturn Roe V. Wade, while 33% favor the court tossing out the landmark decision.
- 29% say they would only vote for a candidate for major office who shares their views on abortion. 44% said the abortion issue is one of many important factors when deciding whether to support a candidate and 26% said it is not a major issue.
The results were taken from two Gallup surveys. One, conducted May 1-12, surveyed 1,009 adults. It has a margin of error of plus or minus 4 percentage points. The other, conducted June 3-16, surveyed 1,015 adults. It also has a margin of error of plus or minus 4 percentage points.
