More than three in four U.S. adults favor of early voting, while 84% support voter verification laws to ensure that only American citizens are allowed to vote, according to a Gallup poll released Thursday.
Further, 83% said they favor policies that would require people registering to vote for the first time to show proof of citizenship, according to Gallup.
The new survey comes less than two weeks before Election Day and as the issue of election integrity continues to roil states across the country.
Notable in the Gallup poll is the strong majority of independents who favor voter verification and proof of citizenship to register: 84% of unaffiliated voters said they support photo ID at voting stations as well as proof of citizenship for first-time voters.
In addition to the 76% overall who said they support early voting, 60% said they favor sending absentee ballot applications to all eligible voters before an election. Further, 58% said they do not favor limiting the number of drop boxes for returning absentee ballots. Among independents, 76% said they favor early voting and 63% favor absentee ballots.
Also, 60% of all surveyed, including 60% of independents, said they favor enacting automatic voter registration at places like the DMV, among state agencies.
"Majorities of Americans favor a range of election law policies that expand voters' access to the ballot box, including early voting, automatic voter registration and sending absentee ballot applications to all eligible voters," Gallup said in its analysis. "They also broadly support measures to limit fraud and ensure election integrity, including requiring photo identification to vote and providing proof of citizenship when first registering to vote."
Gallup surveyed 1,023 adults from Oct. 1-12. The margin of error is 4 points with a confidence level of 95%.
