More than six in 10 registered voters support stricter gun laws in the wake of last week's Las Vegas massacre, according to the latest Politico/Morning Consult poll.
The results, according to Politico:
- 64 percent of voters support stricter gun control, up 3 points since June
- 41 percent "strongly support" stricter laws
- 29 percent oppose stricter laws, down 4 points since June
- 55 percent of gun owners back new restrictions
- 41 percent of gun owners oppose them
Remarkably, Republicans surveyed are split on the issue, with 49 percent supporting stricter laws vs. 45 percent opposed, according to Politico.
Among those who say they voted for President Donald Trump, 48 percent oppose stricter laws vs. 46 who support them, according to Politico.
Nearly eight in 10 surveyed are in support of banning bump stocks, devices used by the Las Vegas killer to convert semi-automatic weapons into nearly fully automatic.
"The results of this survey demonstrate there is support for at least some new gun control measures, even if support for whole-scale reform is murkier," said Kyle Dropp, Morning Consult’s co-founder and chief research officer.
However, those surveyed don't believe Congress will do anything to impose stricter gun laws — just 26 percent think there's a good to excellent chance of lawmakers enacting gun control measures, compared to 38 percent who say the chances are poor, according to Politico.
The poll surveyed 1,996 registered voters and has a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 2 percentage points.
