Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid says he watches the Washington Redskins play on Sundays only to watch them lose.

Reid, a Nevada Democrat, has long been a critic of the Redskins' name, agreeing with those who say it is a racial slur for Native Americans.

"I love sports, it's an escape for me," Reid told Washington Post reporters on Thursday. "But not football. The only time I turn football on during the week, because [San Francisco 49ers quarterback and former University of Nevada star Colin] Kaepernick is out, is when the Redskins play because I love to see them lose. And they’ve lost more than they’ve won this year. If they’re ahead, I turn it off. I check back later to see if they’re losing."

As for the controversial team name, which owner Dan Snyder has said he will never change, Reid said, "They have to give up, it's a loser for them."
