Top-dollar donors to the Clinton Foundation have hosted the majority of Hillary Clinton's fundraisers for her presidential campaign,
according to The Washington Free Beacon.
Analysis from the Sunlight Foundation found that 21 Hillary for America fundraising events have been or will be hosted by donors to the Bill, Hillary, and Chelsea Clinton Foundation.
To date, they have donated as much as $90 million to the foundation.
Fred Eychaner, the donor who has given the most to the foundation, will host a campaign event in Chicago on May 20. He has donated more than $25 million to the Clinton Foundation. Tom Steyer, also a foundation donor, hosted a fundraiser at his home last week as did Susie Tompkins Buell, founder of the Esprit clothing brand, who has given $5 million to the Clinton Foundation, according to the Free Beacon.
Nevertheless, many of the foundation donors hosting Hillary for America events are longtime Clinton supporters, the Beacon said. Haim and Cheryl Saban, whose foundation has given as much as $25 million to the Clinton Foundation, also supported her bid for the presidency in 2008. Buell and Eychaner are also past political supporters.
The Clinton Foundation has become a source of controversy after a new book,
"Clinton Cash" contends that Clinton, as secretary of state, may have taken action to benefit foreign governments and corporations that donated to the foundation.
Bill Clinton has denied the claims in the book, saying "There's just no evidence," while Clinton's campaign team has gone to great lengths to discredit the book,
according to Politico.
The Free Beacon said that some Clinton Foundation donors have also contributed recently to other groups that are expected to support Clinton's candidacy.
The TomKat Charitable Trust, the foundation run by the Steyers, is a major donor to the Center for American Progress (CAP), an organization expected to play a policy role in her campaign.
Steven Rattner and his wife are also donors to the organization and will host a Clinton fundraiser this week, while CAP and Clinton Foundation donor Elizabeth Bagley hosted a Clinton campaign event last month, the Free Beacon reported.
