Newly released Hillary Clinton emails show she was kept informed of the social media scandal of Rep. Anthony Weiner, the husband of one of her top aides, Huma Abedin.
Clinton, who was secretary of state at the time, received regular updates of news stories from her chief of staff Cheryl Mills,
Politico reports.
Weiner, a New York Democrat, came under pressure to resign from his party's leadership in June 2011 when it came to light that he had sent lewd tweets to a woman other than his wife
Weiner eventually resigned, but resisted for several days before doing so.
Emails released this week show that Mills sent 10 emails to Clinton about news stories related to the scandal in the week before he announced his resignation. They included one in which Abedin was reported to have sought advice from Clinton, who had been in a similar situation with her own husband, former President Bill Clinton.
The stories were sent mostly without comment from Mills, Politico reports. The stories included calls from then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, New York Rep. Steve Israel and President Barack Obama calling on Weiner to quit, and one from former Clinton aide Anne Marie Slaughter telling him to stay.
There were also email exchanges from Abedin during that time, but they were related only to State Department business, Politico said.
The emails have been released as part of a Freedom of Information Act lawsuit by Judicial Watch over Clinton's use of a private email server for government business.
