Some members of the Republican Party do "get it" on immigration, says Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, but President Barack Obama isn't helping matters when he keeps acting alone.
Graham, appearing Sunday on
"Face the Nation" with fellow Republican Sen. John McCain, said he doesn't see how the GOP can win the presidency in 2016 if it adopts self-deportation as its solution.
"Ted Cruz embraces legalization without a path to citizenship," Graham said. "Things are changing on our side."
Asked by host Bob Schieffer how they feel being part of a body and a party that won't act on immigration reform, McCain said, "We'll just continue to fight. We will continue a respectful effort to convince our colleagues in the House that we need to move forward on this issue."
But he joined Graham in saying that Obama isn't helping the case by taking controversial, and some say unconstitutional, executive actions on a variety of issues. He now vows to do the same on immigration.
Turning to the killings of three Israeli teens recently and a possible revenge killing of a Palestinian teen last week, McCain suggested Secretary of State John Kerry return to the region to try to "do a little shuttle diplomacy."
Added Graham: "When you start killing children you put yourself on a path that is hard to reverse." Israel will try to investigate and bring somebody to justice, he said, but, "the other side's not very good at that."
