Poll: Iowa Caucusgoers Want to Stop the Caucuses

Forty-four percent of likely Democratic caucusgoers in Iowa favor switching to a primary, according to a new CNN/Des Moines Register/Mediacom poll.

The Iowans also back eliminating the caucus system even if it risks Iowa's status as the first contest in the nominating season, CNN reported.

Forty-two percent said they want to continue the caucus system.

The results break down like this:

  • 64% of liberals favor a primary, compared to 30% who want the caucus.
  • 38% of moderates back a primary, while 52% prefer a caucus.
  • 37% of those over the age of 55 favor a primary, compared to 47% who prefer a caucus.
  • 53% under the age of 35 prefer a primary, compared to 36% who favor a caucus.

The poll, conducted Sept. 14-18, surveyed 602 likely Democratic caucusgoers. The margin of error is plus or minus 4 percentage points.
