Sen. Lindsey Graham plans to introduce a bill this week that would require congressional approval of any deal the United States signs with Iran over its nuclear program.
Appearing Tuesday on
Fox News Channel's "On the Record with Greta Van Susteren," the South Carolina Republican said every member of Congress and every American should have a chance to look at a deal before it becomes binding.
"This is the biggest decision that any president will make in my lifetime," Graham said. "If we get this wrong and the ayatollahs break out and obtain a nuclear capability it will create a nuclear arm's race in the Middle East."
Both Israel and the United States are in Iran's crosshairs, he warned.
"Let us vote up or down," Graham said. "If it's a good deal I will vote for it. If it's a bad deal I will say start over. Do better."
Republicans have been largely wary of the negotiations taking place between Iran, the United States, Russia, China, the United Kingdom, France, and Germany. They believe Iran is using a nuclear power program to cover for an effort to build nuclear warheads capable of striking Israel and the United States.
"The people negotiating with Iran are the same people that brought you the North Korean deal, and we know how that ended," Graham said. "These are the same people that drew a red line for Assad. These are the same people that say we are going to degrade and destroy ISIL, and ISIL is gapping territory in Syria. … These are the same people that said we have got Russia on the run."
