Billionaire former Democrat presidential primary candidate Tom Steyer is renting his $18 million Lake Tahoe mansion in Nevada to President Joe Biden and his family, including his son Hunter Biden, prompting a local investigation.
Although the White House claims the president's family is "renting the home for fair market value" for the eight-night stay that began Friday, Steyer, an environmental activist, is under investigation for violating a local housing law, The Nevada Globe reported Monday.
Douglas County requires vacation home rentals to be properly permitted and the heavily Republican county has filed numerous complaints the Steyer home was in violation of local law, according to Douglas County head of code enforcement Ernie Strehlow.
"Several inquiries have been received on this address," Strehlow told the Globe in a statement. "We cannot comment further as we are actively investigating any Douglas County Nevada code violations on this rental."
Steyer could be on the hook for a fine up to $20,000 if his home is found to not be properly certified as a vacation rental.
"The owners of any property being advertised and/or operated as an unpermitted vacation home rental located anywhere within Douglas County in violation Douglas County Code and the Nevada Revised Statutes may be subject to a civil penalty of up to $20,000," the law reads.
Neither the White House nor Steyer responded to the New York Post's requests for comment on the allegations that surfaced Monday.
