National Security Adviser John Bolton was called a "war monger" and a "defective human product" in a statement put out by North Korea's Foreign Ministry that was published in KCNA state media on Monday, CNBC reported.

The North Koreans made the statement after Bolton said Pyongyang violated UN resolutions by conducting missile tests earlier this month and sanctions against the country should remain.

The North Korean statement said giving up the missile tests would mean forfeiting the right to self-defense and Bolton is working to destroy peace.

Following Bolton's statement, President Donald Trump appeared to contradict his national security adviser by sending a tweet that said:

"North Korea fired off some small weapons, which disturbed some of my people, and others, but not me. I have confidence that Chairman Kim will keep his promise to me.”

Trump doubled down on his statement at a Monday press conference, The Hill reported.

The president said he was not "personally" bothered by the missile launches that took place.
