Former CIA Director John Brennan ripped President Donald Trump on Saturday for his attacks on former DNI chief James Clapper, who was cited in a House Intelligence Committee report for his role in the release of an unsubstantiated Russian dossier shortly before Trump's inauguration last year.

"Your hypocrisy knows no bounds," Brennan, who served under President Barack Obama, said in his post. "Jim Clapper is a man of integrity, honesty, ethics, and morality. You are not.

"By your words and behavior, you diminish the office of the presidency," he said.

Trump earlier Saturday accused Clapper of being "a lying machine who now works for fake news CNN."

In a report Friday closing its investigation on Russian meddling during the election, the Intelligence Committee accused Clapper of orchestrating the release of the dossier and of providing "inconsistent testimony" about his dealings with the media.

Clapper, now a CNN analyst, first said he did not speak with journalists about a secret intelligence assessment containing the unsubstantiated information.

He later admitted he discussed the dossier with CNN host Jake Tapper and possibly others, the House report said.

The dossier was completed by former British spy Christopher Steele and was paid for in part by Hillary Clinton's campaign and the Democratic National Committee.
