Senate Majority Whip John Cornyn said the Obama administration "distorted the truth to create a fairy tale" to justify getting a nuclear deal done with Iran.
In a column for the
Washington Post's "Outrage Machine," the Texas Republican says the one-year-old deal is worse than originally feared — Iran will be able to restart its nuclear program in 11 years, despite President Obama's promise that Iran would never be able to get nuclear weapons.
"The most troubling part of this saga is that the President and his team didn't dedicate their time to crafting a deal with real teeth to hold Iran accountable," Cornyn wrote. "Instead, they distorted the truth to create a fairy tale."
Cornyn cites recently released documents that reveal concessions made privately by Obama's administration that ease restrictions on Iran before the deal even ends.
"Under the deal President Obama struck, after just 10 years the Iranian government will be well-positioned to create a nuclear weapon in six months or less," Cornyn wrote in the Post.
"That's not keeping Iran from ever creating a nuclear weapon, as the President promised. It essentially reinforces Iran's ability to do just that."
