White House Chief of Staff John Kelly has been questioned by special prosecutor Robert Mueller team of investigators, CNN is reporting.
The interview took place in recent months, the news network said, attributing the information to three people with knowledge of the matter.
The story comes amid reports that Kelly is expected to resign soon. CNN has reported that Kelly and President Donald Trump have stopped speaking to each other in recent days.
Kelly was questioned on a narrow set of issue relating to potential obstruction of justice, CNN reported. Investigators reportedly wanted to know about reports that Trump had attempted to fire the special prosecutor.
The New York Times had reported earlier this year that Trump ordered that Mueller be fired last June, but backed off after then-White House counsel Don McGahn threatened to resign.
Sources tell CNN the White House had first fought the request to interview Kelly, but finally relented.
"In order to question a government official about things that happened during the course of government business, you've got to show that it's highly important and you can't get it anywhere else," a source told CNN.
