Sen. John Kennedy, R-La., said Thursday that the United States must adopt immigration laws that “look like somebody designed it on purpose,” Fox News reports.

Kennedy addressed President Donald Trump’s new immigration plan, saying that he likes what he’s seen, but has yet to view the full proposal. He decried Democrats who think of the border as a “nuisance,” and that illegal immigration is a “moral good.”

"Let me state the obvious. Illegal immigration is illegal, duh," Kennedy said. "Part of the problem is there are people in Washington, D.C. in positions of power to whom the border is just a nuisance, and I think some of them believe that illegal immigration is a moral good.

"It is not. It undermines legal immigration," the senator added. "The president is trying to fix it long-term and again I want to read the bill. But we need a system that looks like somebody designed it on purpose."

Trump has dubbed his plan the Build America Visa system, and claims that it will quadruple the amount of immigrants who are admitted based on their work skills, and drastically cut the number admitted for family ties.

"I could be convinced but I'm not convinced right now that all of my colleagues on the Democratic side really want to fix it,” Kennedy continued. "Some see this as a great political issue. We have to start thinking about the next generation and stop thinking about the next election so much," he concluded.
