New Yorkers support legalizing recreational marijuana has risen to a record level, according to Quinnipiac University Poll.
- 63 percent support "allowing adults to legally possess small amounts of marijuana for personal use"
- 32 percent oppose
Republicans and voters over 65 were less likely to support legalization, while “All other listed party, gender, education, age, racial and regional groups support the measure,” according to Quinnipiac.
- 40 percent of Republicans support legalization
- 56 percent oppose
- 46 percent of those over the age of 65 support legalization
- 48 percent oppose
When asked about the effects that legalization will have:
- 21 percent said people will be more likely to use opioids
- 20 percent said people will be less likely to use opioids
- 54 percent said legalization will have little impact on opioid use
New Yorkers also said that a black person using marijuana is more likely to be arrested than a white person doing the same.
Quinnipiac surveyed 1,076 voters in New York State by phone, with a margin of error of 3.7 percentage points.
