Security and intelligence officials from the United Kingdom and the European Union are publicly warning that Britain is facing a new terrorist threat from citizens who traveled to Syria and were radicalized by the brutal civil war.

The danger of radicalized returnees is elevated because Syria's proximity to Europe encourages travel into the war zone, and rebel groups there have established close relationships with potential volunteers.
