Most politicians have expressed unhappiness that Iran is helping Iraq fight the Islamic State (ISIS) terrorists and the White House and Pentagon have downplayed the fact that the United States and Iran are fighting on the same side, but one Democratic presidential hopeful says he would actually work with Iran to solve the ISIS problem.

Former Rhode Island Gov. Lincoln Chafee was a Republican when he voted against the Iraq War in 2002, a point he likes to make contrasts him with Democratic rival Hillary Clinton, who voted for it.

Chafee, appearing Monday on CNN's "The Lead with Jake Tapper," said Democrats need to nominate someone who has opposed action in Iraq from the get-go.

"It is a chaotic mess over there. It's a Republican chaotic mess, and so we need, as Democrats, a nominee that opposed the war, as we look ahead to fixing it," Chaffee said. "That's the person who would be better to strengthen those alliances and then move forward, working with Saudis, the Turks, even the Iranians, Egyptians, Israelis, Jordanians, Europeans, Russians," he said. "That's how we're going to fix it."
