Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., said Monday that Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh "will not be impeached" after new allegations of sexual misconduct emerged in an article from The New York Times.
"As Chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, I promise you Justice Kavanaugh will not be impeached over these scurrilous accusations," Graham tweeted along with a link to a CBS News article about calls for the judge's impeachment.
The Times mentioned in a recent article about Kavanuagh and the previous accusations against him that a former classmate reported an incident of sexual misconduct to members of Congress and the FBI earlier this year. The allegation was not investigated.
The newspaper later stated in an editor's note the book the anecdote came from "reports that the female student declined to be interviewed and friends say that she does not recall the incident."
"What have we learned the last few days?" Graham tweeted later, with three bullet points: "The [Times] writes first, verifies later. Republicans are presumed to be 'guilty.' Democratic presidential candidates are willing to ruin Justice Kavanaugh's life for political gain. All very sad."
He added, "The latest attacks leveled against Brett Kavanaugh are beyond the pale. My heart goes out to Justice Kavanaugh's family for being forced to endure this ridiculous treatment once again."
