The temporary head of the FBI is being investigated for his role in the bureau's Hillary Clinton email probe.

Andrew McCabe was named the FBI's acting director after President Donald Trump fired former director James Comey Tuesday evening. McCabe, however, has come under fire because his wife accepted a large donation from a Clinton ally's political action committee during her failed 2015 run for a Virginia State Senate seat.

Roughly three months after that campaign ended, McCabe became the FBI's deputy director. He began running the bureau's Clinton email investigation a short time later.

Before Trump took office in January, the Department of Justice announced it would review the FBI's handling of the Clinton email investigation. Among the points to be looked at were "allegations that the FBI Deputy Director should have been recused from participating in certain investigative matters."

It was reported in 2015 that Dr. Jill McCabe accepted roughly $675,000 from Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe's PAC and the Virginia Democratic Party for her campaign. McAuliffe is close with Clinton, who most recently lost to Trump in the 2016 presidential election.

Trump pointed out the McCabe-Clinton connection during a campaign stop last fall.

"One of the closest people to Hillary Clinton, with longstanding ties to her and husband — the closest person, I can tell you that … gave more than $675,000 to the campaign of the wife of a top FBI official who oversaw the investigation into Mrs. Clinton's illegal email server," Trump said at the Sanford rally. "In other words, the man who was in charge of the investigation of Hillary Clinton accepted essentially from Hillary Clinton $675,000 that went to his wife.

"Never happened before. Never happened. Not in this country's history. This is a disgrace. And she shouldn't be allowed to run for president. She shouldn't be allowed. She's a crook."

ABC News reported Wednesday that the search for a new FBI director may conclude this week:
