There is "no question" President-elect Donald Trump can be "vindictive" and "mean-spirited," but he can also "let things go if he so chooses," Fox News' Megyn Kelly, who famously sparred with the New York billionaire during his campaign, said Tuesday morning.
"He came after me like a dog with a bone for nine months, but, finally, when I went to see him at Trump Tower, and believe me, I was not conciliatory towards him, we got past it," the Fox News star and host of "The Kelly File" told ABC's George Stephanopoulos on "Good Morning America," while promoting her new book, "Settle for More."
But still, covering Trump during the election cycle was "a test," Kelly said.
"It definitely posed challenges when he was coming at me so relentlessly and causing security issues in my life and the life of my family, but I did it," Kelly said. "It was a test of me as a person and a professional."
Following the first debate, Trump criticized Kelly for asking him a question about calling women names like "fat pigs." He later attacked her by saying there was "blood coming out of her wherever," during her questioning, which he later said was a comment about her nose.
But she met privately with the then-candidate in Trump Tower and later for a prime-time interview, and said Tuesday those events changed their relationship.
Kelly also addressed her relationship with former Fox CEO Roger Ailes, who has denied allegations of sexual harassment she makes about him in her book.
"We went on to have a healthy working relationship, and what he said about promoting me and having my back is true," Kelly said Tuesday. "It was one of the reasons why even I found it hard to believe that he was a serial harasser, when the lawsuit broke and then women started coming forward anonymously, but it soon became clear upon reading the allegations that at least an investigation was necessary."
She said, though, it is hard to say if she should have come out sooner, as to say something at that time would have been a "suicide mission," as she had only been on the network a short time and he was on the cover of magazines as "the most powerful man in news."
Kelly said she does believe Ailes would still be at Fox if former anchor Gretchen Carlson had not filed her lawsuit, but she did want the matter to be an open and honest investigation into him.
Kelly's contract with Fox is up next year, and she said Tuesday she can "easily stay" there or "go hopefully anywhere I want," as she does not think anything that happened in 2016 would limit that.
