Former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg has added $10 million to his $100 million in donations to support Democratic candidates in the midterm elections, CBS News reports.

Bloomberg, a billionaire who was initially a Republican mayor, switched to an independent, and registered as a Democrat earlier this month. He gave the money to his super PAC, Independence USA, which has spent $7 million on an ad that will air across the country.

"In Washington, one party is calling the shots, and the middle class isn't being heard," a narrator says in the ad. "We need a new Congress that will cut taxes for the middle class, ensure coverage for people with pre-existing conditions, and protect Social Security and Medicare."

It concludes, "Vote for a Democratic candidate for an economy that works for everyone.”

"It's clearer than ever that we need a new Congress," Bloomberg told CNN in a statement. "With the midterm elections less than two weeks away, we're taking this message from coast to coast and urging voters to elect Democrats to the House and the Senate."
Bloomberg also founded the nonprofit Everytown for Gun Safety, which advocates for gun control.
