China's rising threat to the United States, including a call from its leader, Xi Jinping to make foreign nations dependent on its supply chains, is increasing because of the weakness being shown by President Joe Biden and his policies, Rep. Michael McCaul said Sunday.
"When you project weakness, this is what you get," the Texas Republican, who chairs the House Foreign Affairs Committee, told Fox News's "Sunday Morning Futures" host Maria Bartiromo. "So now, our foreign nation adversaries like Russia, China, Iran, and North Korea are emboldened and empowered."
McCaul pointed to the Department of Justice's China Initiative which involved the investigation of many cases of espionage. It also led to former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo shutting down China's consulate in Houston, which McCaul said was the right move.
"What has this administration done?" said McCaul. "They're not pursuing indictments, but espionage has not changed. Espionage is still going on, it's just we have a Justice Department that's not pursuing it."
Biden also waived sanctions on the Russian Nord Stream 2 pipeline, claiming that that was in the best interest of the United States, but McCaul called that "absolutely insane" and said it sent the wrong message.
"Then you have Afghanistan, the debacle, the implosion of Afghanistan," he said, noting there was a "direct cause and effect" between what happened there and Russian President Vladimir Putin's decision to invade Ukraine.
"He meets with Chairman Xi in Beijing," he said. "They make their unholy alliance, so now Xi is threatening Taiwan in the Pacific, and you have the largest invasion in Europe since World War II, my father's war, and this is all brought about by this foreign policy weakness that's been projected to our adversaries."
Meanwhile, McCaul is still pushing for Secretary of State Antony Blinken to release dissenting cables from the Kabul embassy, where several personnel disagreed on the administration's policy on the withdrawal.
"I want every member of my committee to see it including the Afghan veterans who served so bravely," he said. "They deserve to see it. The American people deserve to see it, and the Gold Star families."
