Rep. Mike Rogers: Iran Aiding Hamas in Gaza

The United States needs a better approach to the Middle East to avoid helping nations that are, in turn, aiding our enemies, says Rep. Mike Rogers.

In a Sunday appearance on ""Meet the Press," Rogers said Iran is aiding Hamas in its fight against Israel, an American ally, and it has the money to do so with assets recently unfrozen by the United States.

The Michigan Republican is chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, and told host Bob Schieffer that Qatar, another supposed American ally in the region, also is supporting Hamas.

"That's why this is so intertwined that makes it a very dangerous stew indeed," Rogers said.

America just freed up $2.8 billion in frozen assets to get Iran to keep negotiating on its nuclear arms program. "That means they can continue to do bad activities in the Gaza Strip, including, we believe, at least missile components," Rogers said.

"Iran is publicly, in their own newspapers, touting the fact that they are helping to militarize Hamas in the Gaza Strip," he said. "They’re supporting Hezbolah in the fight in Syria and supplying Hamas in the Gaza Strip with weapons."

Shia and Sunni Muslims may be fighting each other in places such as Iraq and elsewhere, but their common goal, Rogers said, is that neither wants a Jewish state in their region.
