Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell on Tuesday lashed out at the “extreme mob behavior” of the “far left,” recounting how he and his wife were targets of “aggressive intimidation” at a restaurant in his home state by a fist-slamming, shouting protester.
In a commentary for the Louisville Courier-Journal, the Republican leader called it one of “several examples that when the far left doesn’t get what it wants through the democratic process, it resorts to intimidation and mob tactics.”
Decrying the “antics and incivility” during the confirmation hearings of Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh, McConnell declared that “how our government is supposed to work” is with “reasoned judgment and respect, not with intimidation and extreme mob behavior.”
In his own brush with incivility last week, McConnell said one man “rushed” at he and his wife, Secretary of Transportation Elaine Chao, while they were at the restaurant and “began shouting, slamming his fists on our table, and causing a disruption as others tried to eat.”
He said diners and restaurant staff ended the ruckus, but McConnell said “the reality is simple.”
“I will not be intimidated,” he wrote. “But this issue is not really about me, or about any individual elected official. It’s about something larger: The mob mentality that is being systematically fed and encouraged by the far left all across our nation.”
