House Minority Leader Rep. Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., hailed "a new day in America" in the wake of Tuesday elections that gave Democrats a majority in the House of Representatives.

In a speech thanking volunteers who "mobilized in historic numbers," Pelosi urged them to "remember this feeling – know the power to win."

"Thanks to you, tomorrow will be a new day in America," she said, also congratulating the "dynamic diverse incredible candidates who have taken back the House for the American people."

"Today is more than about Democrats and Republicans," she said. "It's about restoring the constitution's checks and balances to the Trump administration. It's about stopping the GOP and [Senate Majority Leader] Mitch McConnell's assaults on Medicare, Medicaid, the Affordable Care Act, and the healthcare of 130 million Americans living with preexisting medical conditions," ticking off a laundry list of Democratic legislative aims.

"Our founders believed in a principle that they knew must guide our nation," she added. "First in our declaration, they promised life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness but they gave us guidance, E pluribus unum — from many one.

"And today, the American people have spoken to restore that vision."
