The CNN host and former House speaker, spelling the name incorrectly as Kerrey, declared in a series of tweets that Kerry was "out of touch with reality," and that by making policy decisions in a "fantasy world" he was dangerous to U.S. safety.

In a keynote speech at a U.S.-run cultural center in Jakarta, Indonesia, last week, Kerry compared global warming to other threats such as terrorism or nuclear proliferation. He said that countries must work together to make things safer, with the key being an informed energy policy to reduce the amount of greenhouse gas emissions.

"It's not an exaggeration to say to you that the entire way of life that you live and love is at risk," said Kerry while attacking those who deny that global warming exists.

"We should not allow a tiny minority of shoddy scientists and science and extreme ideologues to compete with scientific facts," Kerry said. "The science is unequivocal, and those who refuse to believe it are simply burying their heads in the sand. We don't have time for a meeting anywhere of the Flat Earth Society."

Gingrich, a former Republican presidential candidate, has previously indicated that he is not a supporter of former Vice President Al Gore’s theory that global warming is dangerous to the future of mankind.

Earlier this year on "Crossfire," he said, "The age of the dinosaurs was dramatically warmer than this is right now, and it didn't cook the planet. In fact, life was fine."

In his final tweet on the subject, Gingrich apologized to former Nebraska Sen. Bob Kerrey, a Democrat, for misspelling John Kerry’s name "as though he were Bb's relative."

Kerry’s comments came in the middle of one of the worst winters in U.S. history, fueling claims from Oklahoma Republican Sen. Jim Inhofe that global warming is a "hoax" that could cost the United States billions of dollars under stricter environmental controls.

According to The Washington Post, the U.S. and China, which create the most carbon dioxide emissions blamed for heating up the planet, have announced a plan to combat global warming together.
