There are no consequences to breaking immigration law in the United States, says an Arizona sheriff who has been outspoken on the issue.

Appearing Thursday on Fox News Channel's "Your World with Neil Cavuto," Pinal County Sheriff Paul Babeu was asked why illegal immigrants protesting Donald Trump in Washington, D.C., weren't simply arrested by immigration officials on the spot.

"Maybe because they take the approach that it would be infringing on their freedom of speech," Babeu said. "But what about the other laws that they're breaking? And that’s where there is complete — when it comes to immigration laws — there is no debate here, it's complete lawlessness."

There are no consequences for breaking immigration law, Babeu said. "That’s why we see 131 percent increase in families coming across over the past six months alone, the Mexican border into the United States."

Babeu said the message has gone out: "Make it to the border and you're home free."

There is currently "deferred action" for 12 million to 20 million-plus illegal immigrants under President Barack Obama. "Hillary Clinton has already announced, gone a step further than Obama and says that she’s going to actually put them on a path to citizenship."
